In the latest ‘Travel Trends Report’ from Skyscanner, Shillong is the only Indian city appearing on this highly regarded list of favorite destinations. Many Indian travelers looking for some scenic beauty and cultural variety have also admired Shillong, which is also coined as ‘Scotland of the East’ due to its beautiful hills and lush green scenery.

According to the report, there has been a noticeable spate of Indian tourists who are inclined towards adventure cum leisure holidays to countries like Baku and Langkawi as well as other offbeat countries like Tromso in Norway, Tashkent in Uzbekistan and Al-Ula in Saudi Arabia. This is a clear shift in the taste of the travelers which points towards a greater inclination to visit places that are different and mostly untouched.

It was noted that Indian travelers are also looking towards affordable travel options in their travel plans. In the context of the local pricing metric, Skyscanner travel and destinations expert commented that for Indian people, travel costs are a major concern with about 2 out of 3 people searching for hotels, flights, and meals expenses when going on a trip. In order to cater to such customers, the current market report includes ‘Best Value Destinations’ section, which highlights the places where a drop akin to this in airfares has been witnessed in the last financial year.

The most prominent city in this case is Almaty in Kazakhstan, where flights from India have become cheaper by 44 percent. There have been reductions in tariff prices in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta too, thus, all these places are ideal for low-cost travel.

It is now being reported that Indian tourists want more of ‘out of the box’ travel and are more focused on interesting activities rather than simply spending time at a location. The immerse art events and live sports activities has also grown in popularity according to the study.

For illustration, many individuals have already gone out and booked their tickets to attend the Formula 1 event on 2nd December which is the cause of the 188% increase in flight tickets to Abu Dhabi. It has also been established that, almost half of the young tourists are willing to engage in art activities that provide hands on experience, and younger tourists more especially those aged between 25-34 years exhibit keen interest towards attending events.

There has been a rising trend for ‘Gami-Vacation’ and ‘Astro-adventures’ which has also caught the attention of those who find gaming-tourist destinations or stargazing fascinating.

Because of these evolving travel needs, tourists from India are changing their travel goals and exploring new destinations, both in India and around the world. With a concentrated focus on Shillong, Indian Tourism will move towards meaningful, values-driven & experiential tourism by the year 2025.
