History And Significance
The festival primarily commemorates the day Lord Shiva vanquished the demon Tripurasura on Kartik Purnima, destroying his three celestial cities (Tripura). Overjoyed by this victory of good over evil, the gods and goddesses descended to Earth to celebrate by lighting lamps on the ghats of Kashi (Varanasi). This is why the festival is also known as Tripurari Purnima.
It is a firmly held belief that on this day, all the deities of the Hindu pantheon descend to Earth to bathe in the holy Ganges River. Lighting millions of diyas is the way devotees welcome and honor their divine guests.
The tradition of lighting tall lamps (Akashdeep) on certain ghats, like Panchganga Ghat, honors the memory of departed souls and symbolically guides them to heaven.
