Beautification Of Ahmedabad's Jagannath Mandir Corridor To Link 35 Temples

Jagannath Temple has all set to experience a great transformation with the introduction of a new corridor designed on the lines of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. This redevelopment project, which is being undertaken by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), aims at improving the pilgrimage experience by capitalizing on the temple's cultural and spiritual importance as the point of origin of the grand Rath Yatra in Gujarat.

The ambitious 155-crore temple link project, in fact, links 35 old temples in the city by a 2-kilometer heritage trail, starting from Vasant Chowk and travelling across important landmarks such as the Ganesh Temple and Saptarshi No Aaro, before finally coming to Jagannath Temple.

The corridor will also align well with the traditional Jal Yatra route and thus ensure the continuous connection of these sites with one another. In addition to the above, it will involve developing temple squares, gardens, and a heritage interpretation center, which would bring forward the vibrant and rich cultural legacy of Ahmedabad.

A significant feature of the project is going to be a multilevel parking facility built with the capacity to accommodate 750 vehicles, thus eliminating traffic congestion, especially during major functions like Rath Yatra.

The Redevelopment Will Happen In Three Phases:

Phase 1: This renovation is primarily purposed for renovation of temples towards Vasant Chowk and Rambari, which are besides the Sabarmati river. The revival work is intended to revive previously existing forms in terms of history and retaining their architectural beauty.

Phase 2: The next stage will focus on the creation of a grand plaza that will be inaugurated right in front of the Jagannath Temple as the main entrance for the visitor. There will be renovating temples at Saptarshi No Aaro. A heritage gate, to include further jewel in the cultural significance of this area, will be constructed over the Sabarmati River.

Phase 3: This project aims to revamp Tilak Bag, of which 1,600 square meters will be dedicated to a heritage center. Along with this, a multi-level parking facility will also be constructed to further alleviate the traffic problem in that location.

In addition, it is going to build a big visiting plaza for about 4,000 devotees outside the temple-an open space-welcoming the worshippers and enhancing the spiritual environment. The development project includes improvement on the Jal Yatra route so that pilgrims can use it during the festival period without hassles from Jagannath Temple to the Sabarmati River.

This transformation will see not just improved infrastructure around the Jagannath Temple, but also resulting in a richer and more accessible pilgrimage experience for devotees.
