This zamindar house, built with bricks and wood, holds the memories of the humorist writer Panchanananda, also known as Panchu Thakur. You’ll be surprised to learn his real name.
The zamindar house resonates with the legacy of Panchanananda, whose real name was Indranath Bandopadhyay. Born in 1849 at his maternal home in Pandugram, Indranath adopted the pen name Panchu Thakur, under which he wrote throughout his life. In 1878, he launched the magazine Panchanananda in Kolkata, establishing himself as a pioneer in Bengali humor literature.
Some notable works of Panchu Thakur include Kalpataru, Khudiram, and Bharat Uddhar. It is said that even the legendary Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay praised his literary contributions. Indranath’s ancestral home is located in Gangatikuri village of Ketugram and is locally known as the “Babur Bari” (House of the Gentlemen). He passed away in 1911 when he was 62 years old. Even today, his house keeps the family’s legacy alive and tells the stories of their zamindari days.
The temple courtyard is decorated with beautiful Belgian glasswork. Festivals like Durga Puja, Kartik Puja, Saraswati Puja, and Holi are still celebrated here with great joy and enthusiasm. During Durga Puja, hundreds of people are served meals in this household, and the Holi celebrations turn the zamindar house into a bustling hub of activity.

It is believed that the Durga and Jagaddhatri Pujas in this house are several centuries old. Although most of Indranath’s descendants now live elsewhere due to professional obligations, a trust has been formed to maintain the house and oversee the religious rituals. Many visitors from far and wide come to explore this historic zamindar house.
