Australia Introduces New Visa Policy To Manage Student Arrivals

Australia has introduced a fresh plan to manage the growing number of international students coming into the country. Education Minister Jason Clare recently shared the news, highlighting a new two-tier visa system. This system is designed to give priority to applications from institutions that are considered "sustainable." The idea is to keep migration under control while making sure educational opportunities are spread fairly across institutions.

Here’s how it works: Schools will get fast-tracked visa approvals until they reach 80% of their allowed international student numbers. After hitting that mark, visa processing will slow down to a regular pace. This change comes after an earlier attempt to limit the number of international students was blocked in parliament. Even though the opposition party supports the idea of reducing student arrivals, they voted against the proposal.  

Finance Minister Katy Gallagher explained the plan further, saying it would encourage students to choose smaller or regional universities. This is part of a broader effort to balance student numbers across the country. With an election set for May 17, the issue of migration has become a hot topic. Australia’s migration numbers have been climbing fast, with predictions for this year’s net overseas migration jumping from 260,000 to 340,000.  

Interestingly, the number of student visa arrivals has dropped by 25% over the past year. From 278,000 students in June 2023, the number fell to 207,000 by June 2024. However, the opposition has criticised the government, blaming poor migration management for worsening the housing crisis. Rising immigration has driven up property prices and rents, creating more challenges for Australians.  

Australia has also replaced the Temporary Skills Shortage Visa with a new program called the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa. This program offers three pathways: Essential Skills, Core Skills, and Specialist Skills. The Core Skills Pathway includes a list of 456 in-demand jobs. These jobs pay between AUD 70,000 and AUD 135,000 a year and cover roles like software engineers, medical specialists, cooks, and even dog trainers! Industries like technology, health, education, agriculture, and construction stand to benefit from this program.  

These new visa rules show Australia’s efforts to tackle migration issues while meeting labour needs in key industries. The government is working to find the right balance, ensuring the country benefits from skilled workers while addressing challenges in housing and education.
