According to reports, five months earlier, torrential rainfall resulted in extensive landslides that went on to destroy roads, bridges, and other infrastructures along the North Sikkim Highway, thus ending the tourism activity in Mangan district. The local economy that depends highly on these picturesque places was ruined because of the ban imposed on tourism activity.
The decision to gradually open the district was made by CS Rao, Principal Secretary to the Government of Sikkim, Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, who stressed the importance of ensuring ease of access and safety. He stated, "After assessing the current situation and road conditions in Mangan district, it has been decided to allow tourists in staggered manner". The district government has to devise a plan that would ease inflow of visitors and ensure safe and orderly reopening.
With all its efforts bearing down on returning connectivity to the area, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been up and running to mend the huge breakages. The road repair works under the BRO are facilitating many tourists in making their travel back to this beautiful area for escapade and exploration. According to officials, restoration works are being carried out as if it were on a war footing, referring to the urgency around the task.
It is said that the opening would do well for the rejuvenation of tourism in Mangan district, which is known for its unspoiled richness of nature and cultural diversity. Guru Dongmar Lake is sacred and beautiful; it is also one of the highest lakes in the world. Yumthang Valley is popularly known as "Valley Of Flowers" and offers breathtaking views. The ever-pretty, peaceful Lachung and Dikchu with their picturesque villages and landscape have also attracted tourists seeking peace in this great Himalayan range.
Even as the district readies itself for the tourists, guidelines for safety and sustainability are likely to be instituted by the authorities. This phased reopening signals the resilience of the region, which will gradually reaffirm its position among the prime destinations for nature lovers as well as adventure seekers.
