La Niña is the climatic counterpart to El Niño. El Nino leads to warmer periods while La Nina induces cooling in the pacific region. This cooling brings about weather alterations in different parts of the world, inter alia, colder and wetter winters in some places.

The IMD issued its statement on September 2, 2024, explaining that India will face an extremely cold winter season and all the associated consequences. The phenomenon of La Niña, which has already caused cooler temperatures and above-normal precipitation, is also to be expected in this forecast.

La Niña phase usually reaches its strongest intensity during the wet months between October and February with a gradual establishment phase sometime between April and June. This cooling phase can last for up to two years but in the current case of La Niña being experienced, it is said to persist for between nine to twelve months hence covering a long weather cycle.

This year due to the effect of La Niña and cool sea surface temperatures, India is likely to face a harsh winter characterized by extra drop in temperatures and rainfall. Consequently, the season can be prolonged and more severe than usual.
