Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag Tragedy: 14 Killed, 12 Injured as Tempo Traveller Plunges into Alaknanda River

A devastating accident occurred in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district on Saturday,  resulting in the deaths of 14 people and injuring 12 others. The incident involved a tempo traveller that skidded off the road and fell into the Alaknanda river on Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway a 150-meter-deep gorge.

The tempo traveller was carrying 26 passengers,  mostly from Delhi, who were headed towards Chopta from Noida. The accident happened around 11 am near the Raitoli village. The passengers were on a trip to visit the scenic Chopta region.


The rescue operation was led by the local administration and SDRF teams. Seven people who sustained serious injuries were airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh on the orders of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The Chief Minister shared visuals of the chopper airlifting the injured,  stating that the severely injured passengers were being airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh for the best possible treatment. The others were admitted to Rudraprayag district hospital.


“Very sad news was received about a tempo traveller accident in Rudraprayag district. The local administration and SDRF teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations. The injured have been sent to the nearest medical centre for treatment. The district magistrate has been ordered to investigate the incident,"  read the X post shared by Uttarakhand CM.


“I pray to God to grant the souls of the departed a place in his feet and provide strength to the bereaved family to bear this immense pain. I pray to Baba Kedar for the speedy recovery of the injured,"  Pushkar Singh Dhami wrote on X.



Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stopped by AIIMS to check on the injured and see how they were doing. "After reaching AIIMS,  Rishikesh,  met the people injured in the tempo traveller accident in Rudraprayag and enquired about their well-being. I also contacted the family members of the injured and assured them of all possible help from the government,"  he posted on X.



Dr. Meenu Singh,  the Director of AIIMS Rishikesh,  shared that,  sadly,  two of the seven patients brought to the hospital had already passed away by the time they arrived. "Seven patients were brought to AIIMS,  two of them were brought dead, while the condition of two patients is very serious. Three patients are stable,"  said Dr Meenu Singh.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund to the families of the deceased. He also announced Rs. 50,000 compensation for those who sustained injuries in the accident. "The road accident in Rudraprayag,  Uttarakhand is heartbreaking. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones. Along with this,  I wish speedy recovery of all the injured. Under the supervision of the state government,  the local administration is engaged in providing all possible help to the victims,"  Modi wrote on X.


Union Home Minister Amit Shah offered his condolences to the families of the deceased and expressed support for the rescue and relief efforts. "Received the sad news of the road accident in Rudraprayag,  Uttarakhand. My condolences are with the families of those who lost their lives in this accident. The local administration and SDRF teams are engaged in relief and rescue work and all possible help is being provided to the injured,"  said Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a post on X.
