The announcement was like a shot of adrenaline for both conservationists and tourism folks – everyone was suddenly energized and excited. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik unveiled the initiative on his social media platform,  declaring,  "Glad to announce that Odisha is setting up an exclusive melanistic tiger safari near Similipal Tiger Reserve in Mayurbhanj. Tourists and visitors can now have a glimpse of the rare and majestic species found only in Odisha." Now,  even more people will be able to see these special tigers,  making Odisha a top place to visit if you want to spot them.

Similipal Tiger Reserve holds the distinction of being the only home to these 'pseudo-melanistic' tigers,  not a separate species but a genetic variation characterized by denser, broader stripes that obscure the orange background,  creating an almost black appearance. The first sighting of these enigmatic creatures in the reserve was documented in 2007,  and subsequent studies have revealed a higher prevalence of melanistic tigers compared to other Bengal tiger populations.

The safaris will be located near Baripada, Mayurbhanj district,  in a specially designated 200-hectare area within the reserve. Visitors can expect to observe three magnificent black tigers alongside white male tigers,  surplus tigers from the Nandankanan Zoo,  and orphaned or rescued tigers. This thoughtfully selected mix guarantees an exciting experience while upholding top standards of animal welfare..
