The New Pamban Bridge, inaugurated on April 6, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is India's first vertical-lift railway sea bridge. This engineering marvel spans the Palk Strait, connecting Mandapam in mainland India to Rameswaram Island in Tamil Nadu. Built parallel to the century-old Pamban Bridge, it was constructed to replace the aging structure and cater to modern transportation needs.

Key Features
1) Vertical Lift Mechanism: The most distinctive feature is its 72.5-meter navigational span, which can be vertically lifted up to 17 meters. This electro-mechanical system allows larger ships to pass underneath, significantly improving maritime navigation without disrupting rail traffic. The lifting operation takes approximately 5 minutes.
2) Length and Structure: The bridge has a total length of 2.07 kilometers (1.29 miles) and comprises 99 spans of 18.3 meters each, in addition to the vertical lifting section.
3) Height: The new bridge is built 3 meters higher than the old one, providing better clearance for smaller vessels even when the lift is not raised. It stands about 12.5 meters (41 feet) above sea level.
4) Load Capacity and Speed: The bridge is designed to handle heavier rail traffic and is cleared for train speeds of up to 80 kmph. It can support 50 Gross Million Tonnes (GMT) of annual traffic.
5) Durability: Constructed to last for a projected lifespan of 100 years, the bridge incorporates stainless steel reinforcement, fully welded joints, high-grade protective paint, and a polysiloxane coating to resist corrosion in the harsh marine environment.
6) Double Track Provision: While currently operating with a single broad gauge railway line, the substructure of the bridge is designed to accommodate a second track in the future. The bridge is also designed for potential railway electrification.
7) Advanced Engineering and Construction: The lift span girder was assembled using an "Auto Launching Method based on Relationship Principle," developed by Suntech Construction and verified by IIT Madras. Stringent quality checks, including Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) for weld joints, were conducted.
8) Safety Features: The bridge is equipped with mechanisms to withstand wind speeds up to 58 km/h, ensuring safe train operations even during challenging weather conditions. The vertical lift mechanism cannot be operated when wind velocity exceeds this limit.
History And Need For The New Bridge
The original Pamban Bridge, India's first sea bridge, was opened in 1914 by the British. It served as a crucial link for trade, pilgrims, and tourists for over a century. This cantilever bridge had a manually operated Scherzer rolling lift span. However, due to its age, the corrosive marine environment, and increasing maintenance challenges, the need for a replacement became apparent. Rail traffic on the old bridge was permanently stopped in December 2022 due to safety concerns arising from corrosion and weakening of the structure.
The construction of the New Pamban Bridge was sanctioned in 2019 to provide a more robust and future-ready infrastructure. The new bridge addresses the limitations of the old structure by offering enhanced load capacity, higher train speeds, and a modern vertical lift mechanism for smoother maritime navigation.
