Why the New Surcharge?

Let’s be real—running trains late at night isn’t cheap, especially when there aren’t many passengers on board. Kolkata Metro decided to introduce this surcharge to help cover costs and keep these special services running.

The Metro spokesperson explained that the INR 10 fee will be the same for all passengers, no matter how far they’re traveling on the Kavi Subhash-Dum Dum route. This decision wasn’t made lightly; it’s all about finding a balance between keeping the trains running and managing expenses.

What Sparked the Debate?

When the Metro first announced the surcharge on December 3, it caused quite a buzz on social media. Many people shared their opinions, which led to some delays in rolling out the plan. However, after much discussion, the surcharge is finally set to begin.

Some commuters aren’t thrilled about the extra cost, especially those who rely on the Metro for late-night travel. But Metro officials believe it’s a necessary step to ensure the service remains financially stable while still offering extended hours.

A Trial Run for the Future

This surcharge isn’t just about money—it’s also a chance to see how much people actually use the late-night service. During the trial period, Metro officials will gather data to figure out if it’s worth continuing these night trains in the future.

By keeping track of passenger numbers and feedback, the Metro hopes to find the best way to serve late-night travelers while staying within budget.

What Does This Mean for You?

This new surcharge is an important change for Kolkata Metro. It’s a test to see if late-night public transport can thrive in a city where rising costs are a big concern.

Yes, the extra INR 10 might feel like a small pinch, but it’s a step toward better services and a stronger Metro system. So, if you’re a night owl or someone who depends on these trains, your journey will help shape the future of Kolkata Metro.

Let’s see how this trial unfolds—it might just pave the way for an improved late-night travel experience in the City of Joy!
