Italy’s charming town, Sambuca di Sicilia, made headlines in 2019 when it sold abandoned homes with bids starting at just $1 (around ₹85). Yes, you read that right! The idea was such a hit that they repeated it in 2021 and 2024, with starting bids at $2 (₹170) and $3 (₹255), respectively. Tourists loved the chance to live the dreamy Italian life, and the trend quickly caught on.

Soon, other picturesque towns like Mussomeli in Sicily and Zungoli in Campania joined in, offering deserted homes to bring life back to neighborhoods that people had left for better opportunities elsewhere.  


Bivona, another charming Sicilian town, went a step further by offering tax bonuses to buyers willing to spend just over a dollar to buy and restore its abandoned homes. Talk about a sweet deal!

1. It’s Not a Scam 


At first, many people thought this deal was too good to be true. Alexandra Stubbs, from the U.S., was one of them. When she heard her friend bought a house for just a dollar, she was skeptical. “I thought, how is this even possible? It sounded fishy,” she told CNN. But guess what? She ended up buying not one but two houses!  


2. The Houses Are Safe

 

These homes might look old and need some love, but they are solid. According to Giuseppe Cacioppo, the mayor of Sambuca di Sicilia, the buildings are “structurally stable.” Some even come with lovely courtyards and elegant iron balconies. Since many houses are attached, you can combine them to create a bigger dream home.  


3. How to Bid  


The homes are sold through an auction, and the highest bidder wins. The bidding process is completely transparent and happens in front of a judge. To take part, you’ll need to pay a deposit of about $5,399 (around ₹4.5 lakh). If you win, this becomes your initial deposit. If you don’t, your money is returned.  


4. You Must Renovate

  

Here’s the catch: you need to renovate your new home within three years. If you don’t, you might lose your deposit. Take Meredith Tabbone, a financial advisor from Chicago, as an example. She bought two homes and spent ₹3.8 crore on renovations in three years! “It was a huge project, but so worth it,” she said.  


5. It’s Helping the Local Economy  


These sales aren’t just about selling homes; they’re bringing life back to these towns. Buyers from all over the world, including the Middle East, have been purchasing these properties. The influx of people and money has boosted the local economy by $21.8 million, according to Sambuca di Sicilia’s mayor.
