Kolkata Weather Update: When Will Winter Arrive And What’s The Forecast For New Year?

Hey there, my winter-loving friend! If you've been waiting for the crisp, cold mornings of Bengal, you're probably feeling a bit let down this year. Winter in Bengal has been unusually mild, and it’s left many of us craving that cozy, wintry vibe. Even though we’re well into the Bengali month of Poush, the temperatures are still hovering around 17–18°C. Not exactly sweater weather, right?

In North Bengal, dense fog is keeping things a bit mysterious, but in South Bengal, it’s mostly cloudy skies with a drizzle here and there. Some of us wake up to light fog in the early mornings, only to see it replaced by a mix of sun and clouds later in the day. If you’re in districts like East and West Burdwan, Birbhum, or Murshidabad, you might get moderate fog, but that’s about as wintery as it gets.

Missing the Festive Chill

Remember how Christmas felt warm and festive? Well, it wasn’t because of the winter chill—it was just the celebrations! Kolkata, too, is missing its usual nip in the air. With minimum temperatures stubbornly stuck at 17–18°C, it feels like winter forgot to show up.

What About North Bengal?

North Bengal seems a bit closer to winter vibes, thanks to dense fog in places like Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, North Dinajpur, and Malda. However, even there, the cold isn’t as biting as we’d hoped. Humidity is on the rise, with levels ranging from 58% to 93%, which makes the weather feel, well, not-so-wintry.

How Will Be Weather During New Year In Kolkata?

The city stayed under a cozy blanket of clouds on Wednesday, but that didn’t stop Christmas enthusiasts from flooding the streets. Despite the weather, the festive spirit was alive and kicking! The clouds nudged up the minimum temperature to 18°C while bringing down the maximum to 24.6°C. According to the weather experts, temperatures are likely to dip significantly on New Year’s Eve, possibly sliding below 15°C.

So, what’s causing all this? A western disturbance is to blame! It even brought some light drizzle late Tuesday night. This is the second such system to affect Kolkata and South Bengal in just one week. Remember last weekend’s rain? That was thanks to the first disturbance. But don’t worry—this one’s fading away. By Thursday, the clouds should start clearing up.

“We expect the minimum temperature to drop to around 17°C, while the maximum will climb to 26°C,” said Sourish Bandopadhyay, a weather scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre. The combination of the disturbance and easterly winds carrying moisture from the sea is what’s keeping the chill at bay for now. However, the mercury won’t drop sharply just yet—it’s expected to hover near 17°C until the northwesterly winds pick up speed again.

The good news? Starting Sunday, temperatures could take a nosedive, possibly reaching 14°C on December 31. That means a chilly New Year’s Eve night! But don’t get too comfortable with the cold—another western disturbance might be on its way.

The chill may take a little longer to settle in. Until those northwesterly winds blow freely, the true winter vibes won’t return. But hang in there—the weekend promises a cozy drop in temperatures. Get your sweaters ready and enjoy the magic of the season!

Blame It on the Weather Changes

So, what’s causing this winter to go missing? Successive western disturbances have blocked the cold northern winds from reaching us. Add to that some cyclonic circulation and jet stream winds, and you’ve got cloudy skies instead of frosty mornings. A new western disturbance might bring temperatures down slightly to 14–15°C by Friday, but don’t hold your breath for a big freeze.

A Disappointing Winter

Let’s face it, this year’s winter feels like a guest who promised to visit but keeps rescheduling. For those of us who love bundling up in scarves and sipping hot tea while the cold bites at our noses, it’s been a bit of a letdown. But hey, let’s hope the next winter comes through for us with all the chills and thrills we’re missing this year!

Stay warm and keep the winter spirit alive, even if the weather isn’t cooperating!
