West Bengal Government's Free Flat Scheme: Transforming Lives And Communities

Citizens of West Bengal can now avail free flats (Free Flat) for themselves. The Bangla Awas Yojana was initiated earlier by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the homeless segment. Under this very scheme, it has already provided permanent homes to lakhs of people. The state government is now working for the distribution of 300 other flats. These flats have been constructed majorly for rehabilitation of slum dwellers, as well as homeless individuals, in and around Kolkata to enable more individuals to experience better housing.

Free Flat Scheme in West Bengal

Firhad Hakim, the Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, said that under this project, loved by the masses (Government Scheme) initiated by the Chief Minister, 300 new flats are being constructed in the Bagbazar area (Free Flat Scheme). Primarily, these flats would house slum dwellers around Sarada Ma's house in Bagbazar. 80 families have already moved into the first phase of the project.

Sarada Ma’s house in Bagbazar is one of the most significant religious and historical landmarks in West Bengal. Every year, numerous visitors from across the country and abroad come to see it. For this reason, special emphasis has been placed on beautifying the area. Along with improving the roads and surroundings, slum dwellers are being shifted to modern flats. After the completion of the second phase of work, another 100 families will be relocated, and in the next phase, the remaining 120 families will also receive their new flats.

Free Flats Offered By The State Government

This project is not only providing rehabilitation for the homeless but is also enhancing the significance of Sarada Ma’s house and the adjacent Ganga ghats. Firhad Hakim has expressed hope that once the area is developed, it will become a key attraction for international tourists. This would also have an impact on the tourism industry of the state.

The CM, Mamata Banerjee, had given much importance to this project, and the pace of work has been commendable. This is because her view is not on housing alone; beauty and importance will also be attached to the region on the whole. Essentially, this is considered a key and important part in the development plans of Kolkata. The state government, on the other hand, hopes to complete the second phase of the project in time for the next Durga Puja, when 300 families will be handed their keys for their new flats. In addition to this, the roads and the total environment in Bagbazar would be developed and beautified to give a completely new look to the area.
