The ranking is derived from an in-depth evaluation of 55 metrics that fall under the following six categories:

1) Economic and Business Performance

2) Tourism Performance

3) Tourism Infrastructure

4) Tourism Policy and Attractiveness

5) Health and Safety

6) Sustainability

The 2024 report also brings forward some highlights on significant trends in global urban tourism:

1) City Domination Europe: European cities continue to share the biggest part of the pie: six out of the top 10 destinations are in Europe. Madrid is ranked second, while Tokyo follows; Rome and Milan round up the top five.

2) Emerging destinations on the rise: Tourists are increasingly seeking places that are lesser known and more personal-visited third-tier cities as the new hot spots. Beautiful cities with cultural uniqueness and generally more affordable attractions from the mainstream tourist centers are becoming quite hip and attractive with all their emerging status.

3) Increased Global Tourism: 2024 recorded a 19% increase in the number of international arrivals, greatly recovering from the devastating impact of the pandemic on the international tourism business. Europe remained at the top as the region that recorded the most arrivals, which was 793 million international trips. In Asia, Bangkok had its biggest jump in visitors in history after it greeted 32 million tourists, overshooting all pre-Covid records.

4) For record tourism spending: Global tourism expenditure has reached an astonishing $1.9 trillion, manifesting strong recovery and continued demand for international travel. To make global cities even more relevant, innovative strategies measured in the number of miles achieved with sports and cultural events, infrastructure upgrades, and consistent marketing have been adopted.

To counter overtourism, new measures such as entry fees, year-round tourism promotion, and sustainability incentives are being adopted by several cities. Solutions such as AI are being daily more present at the traveller experience enhancement.
