Indian Railways Set To Test Hydrogen Train This December!

By the end of this year, the Indian Railways will embark on yet another engineering milestone by conducting the trial of first hydrogen powered train. Travelling straight for 90 kilometers ‘within’ Haryana, this sustainable engineering marvel intends to operate on the Jind-Sonipat itinerary and coax speeds of up to 140 km/h. This train is not just any train rather it is a step into vying for Indian Railways ambition of net zero carbon emissions by the year 2030.

So Why The Adoration Of Hydrogen Trains?

These trains are not normal diesel locomotive engines. Hydrogen trains are equipped with fuel cells that generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen. What happens now? Just a simple condensation of water and steam with no waving of hand to no smoke produced or harmful pollutants.

And This Explains How This Is All So Fascinating:

- There are no emitted carbon dioxide or nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere.

- 1 tank of hydrogen gives a maximum range of 1000km to the train

- A more pleasant journey with 60 percent noise level lower than diesel engines.

- A more environmental friendly means than the conventional train technology.

A Revolutionary Advancement For Indian Railways

The hydrogen train built at the Integral Coach Factory, based in Perambur, Tamil Nadu comes as a herald of changing times in eco-friendly means of transportation in India. If the trial in December is successful, the railway network intends to deploy an additional 35 hydrogen-powered trains by 2025.

India is also in a race to catch up with countries like Germany, Sweden, and China that have introduced hydrogen-powered trains. This initiative puts India in the map of innovators in sustainable transportation.

What Is In It For You?

A quieter and cleaner mode of train travel with no great chugs of a diesel engine or dark fumes all over its beautiful landscapes. Who would not want it? Hydrogen trains are not only about emissions becoming lower—they are about changing the perception of travelling. For one, it is a novel experience from the point of view of travellers – clean air and less noise all the way to the destination.

What Can We Expect From This?

The trial run this coming December is only the tip of the iceberg. As Indian Railways is the forerunner in the technologies of providing such services, there are intending to extend hydrogen-powered services by the year 2025. If this comes to fruition, this move could dramatically change the landscape of trains in India, making them cleaner, quieter, and designed with sustainability in mind.
