The Gangetic Dolphin is an endangered species-based freshwater mammal and it has now been sighted up to six ghats in Patna that is over 99 kilometer radius of the Ganga River.

If the figures are to be believed, over 70 dolphins have already been spotted this year and their return is the greatest triumph of the rehabilitative programs. It also indicates the better ecological status of the Ganga. For those ignorant of these facts, the Gangetic river dolphin is the India’s national aquatic animal. It is also one of the world’s four species of river dolphins.
The Gangetic river dolphin possess elongated jaws with strong bodies and distinctive styles of swimming which is also captivating. The sight of these dolphins is captivating in itself. Not only that, they are also able to produce sounds in frequencies beyond human hearing, thus enabling them to detect objects or prey even under the muddy waters, which is why they are of great fascination to scientists and nature enthusiasts.
Inauguration Of National Dolphin Research Centre (NDRC)
One of the main contributing factors towards the return of dolphins is the National Dolphin Research Centre (NDRC) which was inaugurated in Patna on March 4, 2024. NDRC is equally important in analyzing the factors that affect the behavioral patterns of dolphins and their cause of death and survival.
The center also educates the local community of fishermen on ways to avoid any accidental killing of dolphins. Through this scientific research, the involvement of local people, and the dedicated efforts for the conservation of the dolphins, there has been a remarkable increase in the number of dolphins seen.
Ghat’s Where You Can See The Gangetic Dolphins
In Patna, there are a number of ghats that serve as a good place for spotting these beautiful animals. Some of the best places include:
Gai Ghat: Gai Ghat is one of eh major area which has gained interest among tourist as well as researcher. It provides a clear view of the dolphins and is one of the few possible places to sight them.
Triveni Ghat (Fatuha): Located at the junction of the Ganga and Punpun rivers, Triveni Ghat is yet another ghat where dolphins are spotted. More than 20 dolphins were noticed in the area of one kilometer, making this place teeming with the aquatic mammals.
Rani Ghat (Sultanganj): Rani Ghat has also become a popular spot for sighting the marine mammals. Almost 10 dolphins are often spotted in this area, helping in the wide range of aquatic environments these animals can be found.
While the dolphins come back to the Ganga, the reconciliation is seen as a victory of conservation and as an assertion of the importance of the work.
