As per the latest news, the National Capital Region (NCR) is about to witness a major transformation in its transport system with the implementation of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). This semi-high-speed rail corridor would integrate core metropolitan regions, starting from Rajiv Chowk in Gurugram to Noida sector-142 and Surajpur in Greater Noida, with the closest metro station situated at Bata Chowk in Faridabad.

Measuring a distance of 60 kilometers the RRTS is expected to cut down travel time as well as traffic and air pollution in the region. The project will have eight intermediate stations along the project route and is expected to cost about INR 15,000 crore in total. This facility is also likely to open up new routes with greater reliability and speed for thousands of commuters every day who currently rely on the over-stretched road networks of the NCR.
During a recent gathering in New Delhi, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Nayab Singh Saini talked about the existing metro system and the plans for developing the RRTS corridor, and how these can be expanded further. They looked into the possibilities of extending the RRTS from Sarai Kale Khan to Karnal which would further link Delhi to Haryana. Another proposition of significance is to stretch the metro railway services up to the AIIMS Hospital in Badsa, from Gurugram so as to enhance the services to the health facilities.
In addition to these changes, there is also an evaluation for the possibility of extending the RRTS network to certain key points around Indira Gandhi International Airport, which is the primary airport serving the national capital, Delhi, along with expansion to areas in Gurugram, Faridabad and Jewar airport. The proposal includes two additional lines, with one to be located in Palam Vihar area of Gurugram, in order to enhance internal transport system of the NCR region and outside as well.
To enhance inter-state travel options, another proposed extension is to link Sarai Kale Khan to the state of Rajasthan and connect to project locations like - Dharuhera, Bawal and Shahjahanpur. Another extension line which has been mooted by the Haryana government seeks to extend the metro line from Gurugram Sector-56 to Panchgaon at state assistance. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the extension in question is likely to be presented shortly, and it is expected that the central government will endorse the project after its assessment.
These strategic infrastructure developments are therefore, very much encouraging since they herald a new dawn in terms of averting the crisis of the growing mobility demands of the NCR through rapid and sustained urban transport systems.
