Speaking to the media, Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber confirmed that the country would introduce a system of Trusted Tour Operators come January. Moreover, it is reported that the purpose of this new system is to ease the entry processes for organized group tours from both countries, as they are also member countries of BRICS, by allowing approved tour operators to handle the entry requisites of the organized tour group. South Africa is therefore focusing on strategies that will help in lessening visa administration processes; in order for them to compete favorably with the tourists from these promising markets.
Schreiber stated that the new visa will help attract more tourists which is one of the major benefits for South Africa. He explained that usually travelers tend to get discouraged with their travel plans because of predominant visa challenges in many countries different from theirs like if they were Chinese or Indian travelers, earlier entry clearance such as visas was a must for them, but not like Americans or British who could come without a visa for a short and specific stay.
The approach adopted by South Africa resembles successful examples from other countries which have simplified the visa processes to encourage travel. The most evident example of this can be seen in the increasing number of Indian tourists after Thailand relaxed its visa restrictions. Similar strategies are being implemented in Saudi Arabia which is also enhancing its visa services targeted at Indian tourists, introducing options such as a four-day transit visa among others. Such changes are in line with other countries that have embarked on efforts to ease travel restrictions in a bid to attract more visitors from Asia.
It is understood that the Trusted Tour Operators scheme is merely a stop-gap measure, the long-term objective being the introduction of an e-visa system which will facilitate a much quicker non-paper entry process. This is consistent with South African policy directions in other areas, for instance work permits, where the aim is to ease the skills shortage in the country and enhance immigration processes. Schreiber has sought to cut back on excessive waiting times and reduce restrictions in order to make South Africa more tourist friendly and allow for the skilled workforce to compete as well since he came into office.
Based on the statistics, it was recorded that Africa received approximately 80,000 tourists from India and 37,000 from China in 2023. This is a figure that Schreiber thinks can increase further. For instance, there were over 350,000 visitors from the US and UK combined, whereas Germany brought in about 245,000 visitors. With the roll out of the program Trusted Tour Operators in the near future, South Africa is looking forward to an upsurge in tourism which will enhance the economy and also improve its standing externally.
