"The radiant waves, just before crashing onto the shore, put on a stunning visual display, captivating everyone who witnessed it," wrote one user.
"I witnessed this with my friends and my cat at around 10:30PM in Palavakkam Beach in Chennai.. Damn.. That was the best moment, even my cat's eyes were glowing," said another user.
"Stunning! The bioluminescent waves in Chennai are a beautiful reminder of nature’s wonders. It's amazing to see how these natural phenomena light up our shores. A must-see for anyone near the coast," wrote a third user.
However, there was a nudge of curiosity from all as to why the blue display was exceptionally beautiful. This is the effect of water that glows in the dark.
What caused this glowing in the dark effect to take place?
Bioluminescence is a natural occurrence that abounds in most organisms, precisely marine species, following a chemical process. These marine organisms include fish, bacteria, and jellyfish that can glow in the dark. Bioluminescent light has unique characteristics based on the environment and the specific organism in which it exists.
The roles of bioluminescence are still unknown to a certain degree. What is known is that other animals have been observed using it as a means to deter or flee from enemies, entice or locate food, and interact with their own kind, according to the National Ocean Service.
