PM Modi Awarded Russia's Highest Civilian Honour During Moscow Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, was awarded Russia's highest civilian honour, the Order of St Andrew the Apostle the First-Called, during his official visit to Moscow. The prestigious award was conferred on PM Modi by Russian President Vladimir Putin in recognition of his outstanding contributions to strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Russia.

This is the first time an Indian Prime Minister has been awarded Russia's highest civilian honour, which is typically reserved for foreign heads of state who have made significant contributions to bilateral relations. The award ceremony took place during PM Modi's talks with President Putin on a range of regional and global issues, as well as ways to further deepen the India-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership.



On receiving it, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "...I extend my heartfelt gratitude to you (President Putin) for honouring me with Russia's highest (civilian) award. This honour is not just mine, this is the honour of 140 crore Indians."


"This is the honour of the centuries-old deep friendship and mutual trust between India and Russia. This is the honour of our special and privileged strategic partnership...In the past 2.5 decades, under your leadership, India-Russia relations have strengthened in all directions and have scaled new heights each time." 


"The foundation of strategic ties between the two nations that you had laid has only further strengthened with the passing of time. Our mutual cooperation, based on people-to-partnership, is becoming the hope and guarantee of a better future of our people..."



PM Modi's visit to Moscow aimed to enhance cooperation in various sectors, including trade, energy, and defense. The two leaders discussed measures to boost economic ties, including the potential for increased trade and investment. They also explored opportunities for collaboration in areas such as science, technology, and innovation.


What is Order of St Andrew the Apostle the First-Called


The Order of St. Andrew the Apostle is the highest civilian decoration in Russia, established in 1698 by Tsar Peter the Great. Named after Saint Andrew, the first apostle of Jesus and the patron saint of Russia, this honor is awarded to prominent statesmen, public figures, and foreign heads of state for their exceptional services in promoting Russia's prosperity and glory. The award recognizes contributions across various fields, including politics, science, culture, and arts. Notable international recipients include Chinese President Xi Jinping and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
