Viral Video: Indian Mom Drying Clothes on Dubai's Palm Atlantis Balcony Sparks Online Debate Over Etiquette

A lighthearted moment between a mother and daughter on vacation has sparked a surprising debate online. The incident? An Indian tourist,  Pallavi Venkatesh,  filmed her mom hanging clothes to dry on the balcony of their room at the luxurious Palm Atlantis hotel in Dubai. Venkatesh found it humorous and posted the video on Instagram with the caption "Moms just momming at Palm Atlantis."

The internet had a mix of reactions,  though! Some folks got a good laugh out of it and found the whole thing pretty relatable. "Mom always gonna mom,"  commented one user,  highlighting the universality of a mother's resourcefulness.

However,  others questioned the etiquette of drying clothes on the balcony of a high-end hotel. "This is bad manners in other countries. Respect the hotel rules,"  argued a critical viewer. Some comments even got a bit cultural,  with folks talking about "desi" behavior—a term often used to describe aspects of Indian culture. "The problem with desi parents is the toxicity that whatever they do is right. That's how our generation has been embarrassed of our parents all our lives,"  wrote another user.

The discussion even carried on into the hotel! The Palm Atlantis entered the conversation with a witty response, acknowledging "mom duties" while politely suggesting the use of in-room drying options. "Mom duties 👏 We hope you enjoyed your stay! (We include a retractable drying cord in every bathroom,  so that you can dry your clothing over the bath)",  said The Palm Atlantis.

There are moments when the combination of cultural norms and expectations of luxurious travel is not the best way to go. For example,  in the case of Dubai,  as in other cities around the world,  some laws govern how people should look that are sometimes not compatible with hanging clothes out to dry off their balconies as it could be considered inappropriate. Conversely,  other people feel like it would be better for the hotel if there were drying racks to satisfy the guests fully. "Hotel needs to learn and provide hanging spot inside the balcony. Maybe a drying rack or a few clothing lines that can be removed when not in need. Hotel’s fault, frankly. User Experience is an ongoing thing,"  said the user on the post.

Eventually,  everything was about cultural discrepancies,  pragmatism and the power that lies in the internet to change an average day into a worldwide sensation.
